Tell City, IN- Officials with MEDS are pleased to announce that the company has been selected as the emergency department staffing and management partner for a new hospital client in southern Indiana.

Perry County Memorial Hospital is a nonprofit, county-owned critical access hospital located in Tell City, Indiana. The Perry County Memorial Hospital Emergency Department is physician-staffed 24/7 by Emergency Medicine trained physicians. In addition to two fully equipped trauma rooms, the department has seven treatment rooms. Perry County Memorial Hospital ED team also works hand-in-hand with Perry County EMS.

Bill Bryant, Chief Nursing Officer at Perry County Memorial Hospital, states, "We want to make sure that when patients come through the door of our emergency room, they will receive the best quality care. We expect this transition to improve the patient experience and reduce wait times. This is a new day in emergency care for Perry County."

MEDS is excited to be selected as the contracted management group to help support the mission of delivering high qaulity health care in southern Indiana. We are eager to serve this community by providing new physician leadership and physician engagement at Perry County Memorial Hospital’s emergency department.

June 7, 2021- Chris Pepin joins MEDS with over 20 years of healthcare experience. Chris’ practice includes working with emergency departments from the east coast of Maine to the islands of Hawaii. These facilities varied in clinical resources and ranged in size from small rural, 4-bed emergency departments to 60-bed tertiary trauma centers. Chris also spent time working as a flight nurse in Alaska, providing him a hands-on understanding of the inpatient ICU setting and high-level prehospital care. His leadership roles have included Chief Operating Officer, National Director of Patient Experience, Director of Emergency Department and EMS programs, as well as a multi-facility Quality and Service Excellence position.

This variety of acute emergency experiences, combined with Lean Principles and project management training, gives Chris a strong background to build lifelong partnerships in contract development while understanding the operational requirements to make them successful.

After earning his BS in Nursing from Husson University in Bangor, ME, Chris completed his MBA at St. Joseph’s College in Maine. His home is in Orrington, Maine where he and his wife are raising their 3 children and enjoying life to the fullest.

O’FALLON, ILLINOIS. February 25, 2021 - Officials with MEDS are pleased to announce that the company has been selected as the Hospitalist Medicine Staffing provider for Touchette Regional Hospital.

“MEDS currently provides our emergency room staffing, and we have been very pleased with the service for our patients and in dealing with them on the business side,” said Jay Willsher, President of Touchette Regional Hospital. “The addition of MEDS as our physician and nurse practitioner staffing for in-patient will increase quality and improve communication between the ED and the floors.”

“Patients will not notice any difference and should see improved service and continuity of care between their emergency room provider and the staff once admitted to the hospital, if needed,” noted Dr. Len Glover, president of MEDS. “We look forward to continuing our working relationship with Touchette in this new manner.”

MEDS took over the in-patient staffing at Touchette on January 4, 2021. They have provided Emergency Department staffing since 2019.

MEDS is excited to lead the way in compassionate care by developing an essential service for multiple hospital systems in southern Illinois. Starting September 1st, MEDS will launch, a crucial service by providing highly trained sexual assault nurse examiners to the southern Illinois region. MEDS will provide full facility support through emergency room and inpatient treatment in response to the need for specialized resource for sexual assault survivors.

A SANE (Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner) is a specialized forensic registered nurse, trained in clinical care and collection of forensic evidence. A SANE offers qualified, distinct care delivered in a respectful manner while reducing further trauma to the sexual assault survivor. Our SANE program is compiled of experienced nurses that are trained to care for adult, adolescents, and eventually pediatrics. Upon a sexual assault survivor’s presentation to one of our many hospitals, a member of our SANE team will be dispatched to the facility to serve the survivor with care and for forensic collection. The SANE will collaborate with rape crisis advocates and law enforcement to facilitate their services for the survivor. The MEDS SANE team is available, 24/7, , to quickly respond to the facility to deliver compassionate care and for survivor support.

MEDS’ SANE program collaborates with multiple hospital systems and acts as a service line for sexual assault survivors. The program roll out will begin with adult and adolescent treatment while preparing for the expansion of pediatric care in anticipation of upcoming changes to Illinois laws. Our sexual assault response team offers full facility support by providing care for the survivor in an emergency room or inpatient setting,. Ultimately, MEDS will be able to offer outpatient follow up care in partnership with the facilities.

MEDS recognized the need for these trained professionals while practicing in our own emergency departments, and decided to create a service line dedicated to the care of sexual assault survivors. Every 73 seconds, someone is sexually assaulted in the United States. These survivors require access to distinct treatment and care that some facilities, are unable to provide. MEDS is proud to foster the awareness for sexual assault survivors and to provide a solution to the hospitals and survivors in need. We are excited to provide a team of caring, competent professionals to facilitate the treatment these survivors deserve.

April 10, 2020- During this uncertain time, MEDS’ focus and main priority is taking care of our providers and our patients. We have been focusing on keeping our providers informed as events and information develop, as well as partnering with our hospitals to assist with preparation for the unknown this pandemic has brought. Sue Drabing, MEDS Vice President of Provider and SANE Services, has created a nightly Situational Report (SITREP) for all MEDS providers, nursing leadership, EMS leadership from multiple regions, and a member of our local military base. This SITREP includes a breakdown of where patients are testing positive for COVID-19 by counties in southern Illinois (and some surrounding St. Louis counties) as well as new policies, EMS news, admission guidelines, PPE information, and hospital updates.

Mrs. Drabing was recently interviewed by the Illinois Emergency Management Agency (IEMA) about our engagement during COVID-19 and her SITREP. IEMA used MEDS updates to also brief the National Business Operations Center (BEOC), which consisted of federal, state, local, non-profit and private industry partners. Accomplishments Mrs. Drabing discussed were directly related to the community support we have received and been able to coordinate. MEDS has been able to source PPE supplies for our facilities and for our providers with the help of our local community members.

A business located in Paris, Illinois, donated two rolls of industrialized plastic to Horizon Health Hospital to help them create reusable gowns. They were able to produce 500 gowns from this donation. Additionally, they used the plastic to develop a COVID-19 Unit in their facility.

A community member from Flora, Illinois, has designed and produced a face shield prototype. Those were shared between our rural hospitals due to the face shield shortage.

Mr. Robin Brown from RDB Greenhouse Conservatory Builders has created 14 protective intubation boxes for our facilities. The acrylic boxes Brown created are 2 foot, 3-sidedcubes that sit over the patient and act as a barrier to protect the physician and the patient during an intubation procedure. These boxes are intended for use in our Emergency Departments and Intensive Care Units.

MEDS has coordinated with Mutual Aid Box Alarm System (MABAS) to set up temporary ED entry control tents outside of our Emergency Departments. With these tents, we have been able to develop concept of operations and patient flow guidelines for these sites. In addition to our patient screening tents, we were able to generate Alternate Care Sites. These multiple sites are available in the event of a surge and will support the flow of patients ensuring appropriate triage levels.

The MEDS leadership team has been working diligently to improve the safety of our providers and the communities we serve.

O’FALLON, ILLINOIS. February 6, 2020 - Officials with MEDS are pleased to announce that Dr. John Vandover has been named as the new Chief Medical Officer.

“Dr. Vandover is a proven leader with a successful track record of enhancing clinical performance,” said Len Glover, DO, FACEP, President of MEDS. “As our CMO, Dr. Vandover will focus on excellence in clinical care, risk management, and clinical education of our providers.”

Prior to being named CMO, Dr. Vandover served in multiple Medical Director roles in Emergency Medicine, Hospitalist Medicine, and Home Health. He earned his Bachelor of Science, Magna Cum Laude in Biological Sciences from Loyola University. He then went on to receive his Doctor of Medicine from Saint Louis University School of Medicine, Cum Laude and then completed a combined residency in Emergency Medicine and Internal Medicine at Christiana Care Health System. Dr. Vandover is board certified by both the American Board of Emergency Medicine (ABEM) and the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM).

GRAND ISLAND, NEBRASKA. September 13, 2019 - According to the Sepsis Alliance, sepsis is the leading cause of deaths in hospitals. It's also the leading cause of hospital readmission. September 13 is National Sepsis Day. CHI Saint Francis Medical Center in Grand Island, Nebraska sees over 60 people a month for sepsis. According to the Sepsis Alliance, over 8 million worldwide deaths are related to sepsis and just a quarter million of that is in the United States.

The Medical Director of Emergency Services at CHI Saint Francis Medical Center, Dr. Matthew Treaster indicated there are certain individuals in the population that are at higher risk for developing sepsis.

"People over the age of 65, people under the age of 1 or 2 are people with immune systems that aren't as healthy. So, cancer patients, patients with other comorbid conditions like diabetes, COPD, or chronic lung disease are at a higher risk for developing sepsis,” said Dr. Treaster.
