October 11th, 2013

MEDS, one of the Midwest’s leading emergency department and hospitalist staffing and management firms, has named Segun Ishmael, MD, MBA, as Regional Director of Hospitalist Programs. In this newly-created role, Dr. Ishmael will act as interim medical director during the setup of new hospitalist programs at MEDS’ client hospitals, as well as monitor and mentor existing hospitalist programs. He will also continue his clinical responsibilities with MEDS as the Emergency Department/Hospitalist Medical Director at Paris Community Hospital in Paris, IL.

“Hospitals are looking to MEDS for staffing and management expertise, not only in their emergency departments, but also in other areas, particularly hospitalist medicine,” said Dr. Len Glover, vice president and chief medical officer of MEDS. “Dr. Ishmael was integral in developing our strong hospitalist program at Paris Community Hospital. His excellent clinical and management skills, combined with his business background, make him the right choice for managing other hospitalist programs and mentoring our teams.”

Dr. Ishmael’s new responsibilities include managing the startup of hospitalist programs at MEDS’ client hospitals, including meeting regularly with hospital administration, providing direction to hospitalist physicians, serving as a mentor to the new medical directors, and reviewing financials and metrics to ensure quality. Once programs are established, Dr. Ishmael will continue to monitor the operational success of the hospitalist programs to maintain MEDS’ level of quality.

Prior to joining MEDS, Dr. Ishmael was medical director at Harmony Healthplan of Illinois (Wellcare), overseeing utilization management, and case and disease management. He has held previous medical management roles at Physician Management Consulting, Managed Health Services Indiana (Centene), Evercare (United Healthcare) Chicago, and Molina Healthcare of Indiana. He completed his residency at Methodist Hospital, Gary, Indiana, and earned a Master’s of Business Administration degree from Purdue University and a Fellowship degree (on Physician Education and Training) from University of North Carolina Chapel Hill.
